Beta Signup

I’ve been working for quite a while on a new search concept, though the further in I get, the closer the rest of the world gets to what we’re doing.

So today I’m inviting you to sign up for the rather modest beta, which will be ready soon if we can nail down a few difficult  details.

Jawaya is a way of navigating the web and getting better results. And that’s as much as I can say right now, because we’re not a funded startup, and things are moving really fast in this space–it’s going to be very competitive. I predict there will be about 10 funded startups in the next 6 months doing something similar. One of them will be mine, and we aim to make it the best.

We’re raising a round of capital to fund the team, and are shooting for early sustainability. This is my fifth company; my fourth in the tech space, and my third software company. I think it will be the biggest and can possibly have a positive impact on the world by reducing the amount of time it takes for people to find things, and improving the quality of the results they get.

But it will take time, some smart people (smarter than I), and a capital to get there–I’m raising the first round now.

I haven’t felt this kind of positive anxiety, excitement, ego, fear, and fun since ChiliSoft. It’s an amazing discovery process, and I’m digging the ride.

  1. Isn't that funny? You have an idea, start planning, writing, testing basically running it up the flag pole and then BAM! Five new competitors magically appear with slightly different versions of your concept.IMHO this competition validates your idea and timing (as if you needed it), now it is all about execution.Good luck, I plan on watching your progress and possibly offer a hand if/when a need is posted where I can add value. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Just read your article on CNN! Encouraging as we are just starting out and will take your tips to heart – especially about sweating the small stuff! We have had a soft launch of our site, http://recareas.com with a social network at http://connect.recareas.com but are working on the small details before we have a hard launch. Best of luck with your new venture – I will sign up!

  3. Search is dead. As a use-case, Search intrinsically depends too much upon static models to represent dynamic phenomena. It is the brute-force tactic of last-resort for netizens in the most impoverished of cisrumstances. Sure, it's guaranteed commodity money, like selling toilet paper in a cholera camp, but the value-add is fundamentally weak so the margins will always be a problem. Netizens of the future will laugh at how much time the greybeards spent “searching” instead of “doing”.If you want to rule a kingdom in the future of computing, organize your efforts around building and retaining hi-margin service-subscribers. If “connecting users” is your thing, then get serious and focus on very-specific areas of knowledge-worker automation, specifically recruit that community with a relevant high-value subscription service, and forget the abstract 'search' stuff. Search is what novices do, and there are fewer and fewer of those to be found on the Internet, so it makes little sense to focus a future business on that population. Good Luck.

  6. Thanks RJ…will keep it in mind

  7. Well, PT, I agree, search is kind of dead. Dying in a way. And what we're doing isn't specifically search–it improves your ability to get what you need faster. And it's based around search, and it's possible we'll add our own search engine to the mix, but that's further down the road. Sorry to be so cryptic.

  9. I look forward to reading more about this as it develops, best of luck to you!also… edit this out, but your one sentence is off, “One of the will be mine, and we aim to make it the best.”… probably meant one of “them”… I run a content creation business and so yeah, thought you might wanna correct that.

  13. thanks–I rarely proof my stuff, and used to be a proofreader :)change made

  14. Great article on CNN, and I've signed up for the beta! Tip: Stay away from riots after getting fired from your startup#funny – and for what it's worth, I do reports of the “death of search” are grossly exaggerated…

  15. thanks scott!humans will always search. discovery is in our bones…

  16. Hey Charlie– you asked for thoughts, so here are mine:Context, context, context.I'm probably sharing something you already know, but we're all tired of 45,123,769 results on simple Google searches. We're tired of wading through dozens and dozens of sites that look promising but go nowhere.I'm hoping your new venture has already taken that into account and will find ways of capitalizing on metadata where others have failed or not tried. As I noted in a presentation I gave at Akademy 2010 (http://www.slideshare.net/Texrat/enhancing-user-engagement-on-mobile-devices-4699421), people on the data hunt care most about the opinions of friends, family, etc so bringing up results wrapped in such context is key to making the (increasingly mobile) internet friendlier. You might want to also see if you'll have synergies with diaspora. I'm also hoping you'll be as open as possible.I'd love to invest in you, but the crap job I wound up with after a 2009 loss doesn't allow for liquidity. I wish you success!

  17. Thanks, T.

  18. I loved your article at CNN, I look forward to see your project online.Do let me know if you ever need help with the development, I'm pretty sure I might be of help.

  22. Next Big Thing? I would ask that you take a look at http://www.powerverdeenergy.comIt isn't software, or the Internet (search) but it is what we need.
